Lodewijk Toeput, also known as Ludovico Pozzoserrato, was a Flemish landscape painter and draftsman who was active in Italy. Born in Mechelen, Belgium around 1540/1550, he died in Treviso, Italy between 1603 and 1605. Toeput is mainly known for his canvases and frescoes of landscapes and formal gardens with banquets and music-making groups.
The early life of Lodewijk Toeput in his native Flanders is not documented, but it is believed that he studied with Maerten de Vos, a leading history painter who had studied in Italy. He arrived in Venice around 1573-74, where he likely worked in the studio of Tintoretto. Toeput's stay in Florence and Rome is not well documented, but it is believed that he resided in these cities before settling in Treviso.
Toeput painted frescoes, altarpieces, and paintings with Biblical scenes, landscapes, city views, and genre scenes of Venetian social life. His landscapes typically depict spacious vistas, full of atmospheric and picturesque effects. He was principally known for his landscape frescoes and canvases, which combine Flemish and Venetian styles. Some of his notable works can be found in Padua, Treviso, and Conegliano.
