Ludovico Teixeira, also known as Luís Teixeira, was a Portuguese cartographer and mathematician born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1564. He was the son of Pero Fernandes, a cartographer, and was examined by Pedro Nunes, the cosmographer in chief, in 1564. Teixeira contributed to Abraham Ortelius's atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum with a well-known early map of Japan (Iaponiae Insulae Descriptio). He also authored an important atlas of the colony of Brazil, Roteiro de todos os sinais, conhecimentos, fundos, baixos, alturas, e derrotas que há na costa do Brasil desde o Cabo de Santo Agostinho até ao estreito de Fernão de Magalhães (1586).
Teixeira's early life and education are not well-documented, but it is known that he was born into a family of cartographers and mathematicians. His father, Pero Fernandes, was a cartographer who worked with the Portuguese royal court. Teixeira's examination by Pedro Nunes in 1564 suggests that he received formal training in cartography and mathematics.
Teixeira's contributions to cartography are significant, particularly his work on the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum atlas. This atlas, published by Abraham Ortelius, was one of the first comprehensive atlases of the world and included maps of various regions, including Japan (Iaponiae Insulae Descriptio). Teixeira's map of Japan is considered one of the earliest and most accurate maps of the country at that time. Teixeira also authored an important atlas of the colony of Brazil, Roteiro de todos os sinais, conhecimentos, fundos, baixos, alturas, e derrotas que há na costa do Brasil desde o Cabo de Santo Agostinho até ao estreito de Fernão de Magalhães (1586). This atlas provided valuable information about the coast of Brazil and was used by navigators and explorers.
Teixeira's legacy as a cartographer and mathematician is evident in his contributions to the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum atlas and his authorship of the Roteiro de todos os sinais, conhecimentos, fundos, baixos, alturas, e derrotas que há na costa do Brasil desde o Cabo de Santo Agostinho até ao estreito de Fernão de Magalhães atlas. His work had a significant impact on the development of cartography and navigation in the 16th century.
