igins were marked by circumstance rather than privilege. He was the illegitimate son of Baron Grigory Karlovich Kridener, a prominent noble of German heritage, and Akulina Ivanova, a native citizen of Tyumen. Because legal impediments prevented him from inheriting his father's title and lineage in Tsarist Russia, he was registered under his godfather’s surname, Vasiliev.
