A Versatile American Artist
Rainey Bennett was an American painter, illustrator, and muralist whose diverse body of work earned him a place in major museum collections. His artistic reach extended from large-scale murals to delicate watercolors and children's book illustrations. As a freelance illustrator, he maintained a long-standing professional relationship with Scott Foresman publishers and contributed seasonal newspaper advertisements for Marshall Field's. His mastery of different mediums is evidenced by the various collections that house his work, including:
Murals and Watercolors
Between 1934 and 1943, Bennett contributed to the mural movement through the Section of Painting and Sculpture. He also painted George Martin's Home Overlooking Old Naper Hill for the Naperville, Illinois post office and a thirteen-panel mural for the Neil House Hotel in Columbus, Ohio.
Bennett also gained recognition for his watercolor series. In 1939, he produced thirty-six watercolors of Venezuela on commission from the Stanford Oil Company and Nelson Rockefeller.
