Biografi:

Vladimír Janoušek was a renowned Czech sculptor and painter born in 1922 in Ždírnice, Czech Republic. He is best known for his founding membership in the UB 12 group and his collaborations with architects in the 1960s. Janoušek's sculptures are characterized by their radicalization of form, which breaks away from traditional concepts of sculpture.

Early Life and Education

Janoušek's early life was marked by the events of World War II, including the secession of the Sudetenland and forced labor deployment in Nazi Germany. He began his secondary school studies at the gymnasium in Trutnov and finished them in Úpice. In 1940-1941, he was an apprentice at a construction firm in Hostinné, considering studying architecture. However, it was only after attending lectures on theatre organized by the Central Union of Theatre Amateurs that he decided to pursue sculpture. Janoušek studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Brno and later at the School of Arts and Crafts in Prague under Prof. Karel Dvořák. His studies were interrupted by forced labor deployment, and until the end of the war, he worked at a sawmill in Oels, Silesia. After the war, he failed the entrance exams to the Academy but was accepted to the studio of Prof. Josef Wagner at the Academy of Applied Arts.

Artistic Style and Influences

Janoušek's sculptural style was influenced by the late work of Otto Gutfreund and the Prague exhibitions of Western European art, including the works of Baltasar Lobo, Picasso, and Henry Moore. He was also influenced by the reflections of Bohumil Kubišta and the lectures of prof. Václav Nebeský. Janoušek's sculptures are characterized by their moving parts, which represent a radicalization of form that breaks away from traditional concepts of sculpture. His originality and conceptual approach give his sculpture a European significance. He is one of the few Czech sculptors listed in the New Dictionary of Modern Sculpture, published in Paris in 1970.
