Fred Ajanogha: Sculptor of Atlanta’s Soul

Fred Ajanogha, also known as Ajano, is a Nigerian sculptor whose captivating bronze reliefs and public art installations have cemented his place as a prominent figure in contemporary African art. Born in 1958 to Sunday and Rebecca Ajanogha in Benin City, Nigeria—a region steeped in ancient traditions of bronze casting—Ajano’s artistic journey began early, fueled by an innate talent recognized within his family and nurtured through formal education at Creative Art Academy in Benin City under the guidance of Mr. Doran Door. This formative experience instilled a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and inspired him to explore diverse artistic styles. Creative Art Academy proved instrumental in shaping Ajano’s artistic sensibilities, fostering a profound understanding of traditional Nigerian sculpting techniques—particularly bronze casting—a practice deeply rooted in Benin’s rich cultural heritage. Under the mentorship of Mr. Doran Door, he honed his skills and absorbed invaluable knowledge about material manipulation and sculptural form. This early exposure solidified his commitment to mastering the art of bronze sculpture, an endeavor that would define his artistic career for decades to come. Expanding his horizons beyond Benin City, Ajano pursued further studies alongside esteemed Nigerian artists like Felix Idubor and Ben Osawer. These influential figures imparted their expertise in various artistic mediums—including painting and mixed media—broadening Ajano’s creative palette and enriching his artistic perspective. He absorbed their philosophies on artistic expression and the role of art in conveying cultural narratives, shaping him into a multifaceted sculptor with an unwavering dedication to exploring diverse artistic styles. A pivotal moment arrived in 1996 when he was commissioned by the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) to create over seventy sculptures presented as gifts to visiting dignitaries—a testament to his ability to capture grandeur and commemorate significant events. This ambitious project demanded meticulous planning, technical precision, and a profound grasp of sculptural symbolism—challenges Ajano embraced with characteristic determination. Notably, he collaborated with Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on a striking relief depicting Maynard Jackson, reflecting Atlanta’s commitment to honoring civil rights history. This piece continues to inspire millions of travelers annually as they navigate the airport's main security screening area, serving as a powerful reminder of Atlanta’s legacy of activism and social justice. Today, Ajano’s artistic legacy resides primarily in Atlanta, Georgia, where his sculptures adorn locations such as the Atlanta Beltline, Apex Museum, Grady High School, Bessie Branham Park & Recreation Center, and H.J.C. Bowden Senior Facility—spaces that serve as vibrant reminders of his contribution to the city's cultural landscape. His monumental works are permanently displayed at Southern University Museum of Art in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Macon’s Tubman Museum, showcasing his mastery of bronze casting and artistic storytelling. Furthermore, Ajano’s sculptures grace the private collections of influential figures like Jimmy Carter and Maya Angelou, solidifying his reputation as a visionary artist whose work transcends geographical boundaries. He continues to inspire aspiring sculptors through teaching positions at Morris Brown College and Kennesaw State University, perpetuating the tradition of artistic excellence and fostering creativity within the next generation.
