Seung teak lee and mi jung lim: Redefining Architecture Through Conceptual Realism

Seoul & NYC-based stpmj is an idea-driven design practice redefining architecture. Exploring new perspectives, their work gains recognition globally. Founded in 2009 by Seung Teak Lee and Mi Jung Lim, the firm represents a reaction against architectural clichés and delves into innovative approaches to spatial organization and material exploration. Their philosophy centers on “provocative realism,” prioritizing simplicity of form alongside meticulous attention to detail—a deliberate contrast intended to challenge conventional notions of design while grounding projects in tangible realities. ### Early Life & Education: Foundations for Conceptual Exploration Seung Teak Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea (2009), marking the beginning of a trajectory shaped by academic rigor and artistic curiosity. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Korea University, earning degrees in both Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering—a dual focus reflecting an interest in bridging technical precision with creative vision. Subsequently, he honed his architectural skills at Harvard Graduate School of Design, securing a Master of Architecture degree and receiving the Architectural Department Faculty Design Award from Harvard – an honor recognizing exceptional talent and dedication to design principles. His participation in the SOM architecture and urban traveling fellowship 2009 further broadened his horizons and exposed him to diverse cultural contexts. Before establishing stpmj, Lee gained invaluable experience at nARCHITECTS and LEVENBETTS in New York, Herzog & de Meuron in Basel, and nSYSTEMLAB in Seoul—collaborations that nurtured his understanding of global architectural trends and methodologies. Currently, he serves as stpmj’s Seoul Office Director and an adjunct professor at Kookmin University, continuing to inspire the next generation of architects. ### Mi Jung Lim: Complementary Vision & Collaborative Practice Mi Jung Lim, aIA, kira, joined Lee's creative endeavors after graduating with Bachelor of Science from Yonsei University—a formative experience that solidified her commitment to architectural design. She pursued her architectural education at Rhode Island School of Design and Harvard Graduate School of Design, earning degrees in both Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture respectively. Recognized for her expertise and dedication, Lim is a registered architect in Korea and New York State – demonstrating versatility and adaptability within the profession. Prior to co-founding stpmj, she contributed to significant architectural projects at SOM, Andrew Berman Architect in New York, and Office DA in Boston—experiences that honed her skills and fostered collaborations with leading architects worldwide. She currently directs the New York Office of stpmj, holds an associate professor position at Hongik University, and serves as Seoul Metropolitan Government Architect – roles reflecting her unwavering commitment to advancing architectural excellence and fostering innovation within urban environments. ### Design Philosophy & Notable Projects: Embracing Provocative Realism stpmj’s core design philosophy—“provocative realism”—is characterized by a deliberate juxtaposition of conceptual ambition with material grounding. The firm champions simplicity of form alongside meticulous attention to detail, rejecting ornamentation and prioritizing functionality while simultaneously stimulating intellectual engagement. This approach stems from the belief that groundbreaking ideas emerge from confronting limitations—a principle evident in their selection of materials and exploration of spatial configurations. Their projects consistently demonstrate this ethos, resulting in designs that are both aesthetically striking and conceptually resonant. Amongst their accomplishments is *Invisible Barn*, a project conceived as an investigation into how architecture can respond to natural surroundings without resorting to artificial interventions. The studio’s meticulous attention to material selection—particularly the use of mirrored surfaces—creates an illusion of seamless integration with the landscape, prompting viewers to reconsider conventional notions of architectural presence. Similarly, *Shear House* exemplifies stpmj's commitment to innovative structural solutions—a pitched roof structure reimagined as a sculptural element that maximizes natural light and minimizes environmental impact. ### Recognition & Future Directions: Expanding Horizons Through Collaboration stpmj’s work has garnered international acclaim, including features in Wallpaper\* Architects’ Directory 2019 and selection as one of the “emerging voices” by the Architectural League of New York in 2017—testaments to their dedication to pushing boundaries and fostering dialogue within the architectural community. Looking ahead, stpmj continues to prioritize collaborative partnerships and explore new frontiers in design innovation—driven by a steadfast belief that transformative ideas flourish when nurtured through diverse perspectives and experiences. Their ongoing commitment to conceptual realism ensures that future projects will remain grounded in both intellectual rigor and profound engagement with the complexities of contemporary urban life.
