The Legacy of Kentucky Quilting Tradition
Founded in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, in 1983 by a group of thirty-eight passionate quilters, the Trigg County Quilters Guild embodies the enduring spirit of American craft tradition. Its mission is to foster appreciation for quilting—whether through archiving quilts, collecting them, or preserving their stories—solidifying its place as a cornerstone of Kentucky’s cultural heritage. Meeting regularly at the Cadiz Extension Office, the guild comprises approximately seventy members who actively engage in community service projects, notably crafting quilts for veterans and cancer patients. Furthermore, they participate in quilting competitions and have garnered numerous awards recognizing their exceptional artistry. Beyond accolades, the guild distinguishes itself through charitable endeavors—donating quilts to various organizations and causes—demonstrating a commitment to both artistic excellence and social responsibility. Their affiliation with Kentucky Quilts Routes underscores their dedication to safeguarding quilting history and promoting its continued vibrancy across the state.
Early Influences & Formation
The genesis of the guild can be traced back to a shared fascination with heirloom quilts—pieces passed down through generations, each bearing witness to family histories and evolving styles. Members recognized the importance of documenting these treasures and ensuring their survival for future scholars and enthusiasts. Margaret Rudd, serving as treasurer, eloquently articulated this sentiment: “Four of us who are members of the Guild were en route home from a quilt show when one suggested that the Guild make a quilt for the next show. The suggestion was treated as a joke at first. As the discussion progressed, the challenge was evident. Why not? During the months of construction the quilt became known as ‘the show quilt’ and the ‘for-keeps quilt.’ Thirty-five individuals worked between 1,200 and 1,300 hours piecing the quilt.
