La prima versione di Cabanel" Nascita di Venere (Musée d"Orsay, Parigi) creò una sensazione al Salone del 1863, che fu soprannominato "Salon of the Venuses" a causa del numero di nudi allettanti in vista. L'immagine Salon è stata acquistata da Napoleone III per la sua collezione personale. Nel 1875, il New Yorker John Wolfe commissionò il presente, leggermente più piccolo, replica di Cabanel. La composizione incarna gli ideali dell'arte accademica: soggetto mitologico, modellazione aggraziata, spazzolatura setosa e forma perfezionata. Questo stile è stato perennemente popolare con i collezionisti, anche come è stato sfidato da artisti alla ricerca di una più personale interpretazione della verità alla natura, come Courbet.
