Charles Blomfield è conosciuto per le sue numerose immagini delle terrazze bianche e rosa. Sono numeri nelle centinaia. Nonostante la distruzione delle Terrazze da parte dell'eruzione del Monte Tarawera nel giugno 1886, continuò a dipingere questo soggetto fino alla sua morte nel 1926. Blomfield visitò la zona nel 1875, e ritornò più volte, accampandosi per sei settimane con la sua figlia di otto anni Mary nell'estate del 1884-5. Doppiata la ‘ottava meraviglia del mondo’, le Terrazze erano una famosa attrazione turistica. Nelle White Terraces di Blomfield, Rotomahana, sono mostrati al loro più incontaminato, non isolato dall'attività turistica.
