Accusato nel 1894 di essere l'autore di una lettera (la nota, o lo slittamento) che annuncia ad un agente straniero l'invio di documenti militari, Dreyfus è stato processato in camera da un consiglio di guerra che lo ha condannato all'unanimità alla deportazione e al degrado militare.
