Nato a Delft, Mijtens o Mytens, si stabilì a Londra nel 1618. Divenne pittore di corte a Giacomo I nel 1621 e ricoprì anche il titolo di Carlo I (1600-1649), fino al 1634, quando Anthony van Dyck fu ristabilito in Inghilterra. Questa è la prima, 1629 versione di un tipo di ritratto reale a tutta lunghezza standard, con pittura fine e dettagliata drappeggio e regolazioni minori a vari contorni realizzati dall'artista.
