Dal 1890, Maurice Denis si afferma come teorico della Scuola Pont-Aven, formulando i principi fondamentali cari a Gauguin e al Nabis. Questa tela, dipinta nel 1899 mentre in vacanza a Portier guest-house a Le Pouldu, raffigura una delle scene di famiglia Denis era appassionato di pittura. Sua moglie Marthe e la figlia minore Bernadette sono affiancate dalla sorella di Marthe Eva e dalla figlia maggiore di Denis, Noelle. La scelta dei colori di Denis dà una sensazione calda al lavoro, e questa impressione è rafforzata dai toni contrastanti del mare durante la notte, vista attraverso la finestra aperta sullo sfondo.
