Farrer immigrato a New York dalla sua nativa Inghilterra nel 1860 e ha iniziato a rompere la vista di New York City e paesaggi marini. Fu uno dei più forti sostenitori del mezzo di incisione come strumento creativo per gli artisti, servendo come uno dei fondatori del New York Etching Club nel 1873. Questo lavoro, originariamente pubblicato in American Art Review (1879), è un eccellente esempio dei suoi soggetti marini che combinano gli effetti atmosferici e leggeri in un unico piatto. Il buio, riccamente inchiodato sotto i lati delle barche in primo piano contrasta bruscamente con le linee delicatamente incise e attive dell'acqua e del cielo.
