Uno schizzo preparatorio montato su carta in inchiostro nero raffigurante un falco appollaiato su un ramo, datato 1903. I Falcons erano stati a lungo utilizzati in Giappone per la caccia, e simboleggiarono la forza e la nobiltà. Erano quindi associati alla classe dominante di guerrieri (samurai). Questa è un'immagine rapidamente abbozzata, con il ramo suggerito con pochi colpi, e il piumaggio semplicemente formato.
