Iscrizione sul piedistallo: RENDUE A LA LIBERTÉ ET A L’ÉGALITÉ PAR LA CONVENTION NATIONALE DU 16 PLUVIOSE DEUXIÈME DE LA RÉPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE UNE ET INDIVISIBLE2. Questo busto evoca l'abolizione della schiavitù con il decreto del 4 febbraio 1794. Fu ispirata da una notevole fontana che Houdon espose al Salone del 1783, e che il Duc d’Orléans pose nel suo giardino, l’attuale Parc Monceau. Esso presentava una rappresentazione a grandezza naturale di un giovane servo nero (fatto di piombo e nero dipinto) che versava acqua da un ewer bronzo dorato sopra una giovane donna di balneazione (made di marmo bianco).
