Questo studio amorevolmente conciso, forse stabilito in testimonianza diretta ma più probabilmente appena ricollegato, non è mai stato sviluppato in un dipinto finito, ma è diventato l'ovvia fonte dell'artista "Sunset". Insieme a "Sunset on the Sea" e alcune altre immagini della sua carriera tardiva, Kensett ha inconfondibilmente indulgeto una tavolozza calda e altamente saturata in varianza con la tonalità grigio perlace del suo stile firma. All'apice di una carriera di successo invidioso e nella relativa privacy del suo studio isolano a Long Island Sound, Kensett potrebbe aver sentito bene una licenza che non aveva prima di ampliare, nei suoi termini tipicamente misurati, il suo vocabolario estetico – qui per includere gli effetti riccamente cromatici di J. M. W. Turner o anche quelli che hanno segnato le immagini dei suoi colleghi Frederic E. Church e Sanford R. Gifford.
