Boxing ha affascinato artisti e scrittori britannici del tardo Settecento, fornendo uno spettacolo che combinava la violenza con bei corpi. Il manager di Humphreys commissionò questo ritratto in anticipo di una partita celebrata, e il dipinto circolava ampiamente in riproduzioni stampate. Hoppner ha raffigurato il giovane pugile sul tappeto erboso nella sua posizione difensiva, indossando breeches, calze di seta e pompe.
