Nel 1654 Rembrandt creò sei incisioni che esplorarono l'infanzia di Cristo. Questo argomento introduce una realtà quotidiana in un evento biblico fondamentale. Situata in posizione centrale, la Sacra Famiglia riposa all'interno di una stalla atmosferica, realisticamente comune nel suo disarray, mentre i pastori si avvicinano al bambino con un senso di timore. L'illuminazione artificiale da una lampada ad olio su una staffa sopra la Vergine è sostituita da un'illuminazione divina. Guardate da vicino l'uso sapiente di Rembrandt di ombreggiare, che è più scuro intorno al perimetro dell'opera e più leggero verso il centro, per scoprire che la fonte di questa luce è in realtà la Madonna e il Bambino, entrambi irradiando brillantemente con un bagliore divino.
