L'artiglieria unisce il soggetto tradizionale di un'azienda milizia con lo stile decisamente moderno del cubismo. Il dipinto raffigura ufficiali a cavallo che accompagnano un caisson (carro di munizioni per l'artiglieria in movimento) che trasporta una pistola da campo e tre soldati in caschi. Sullo sfondo, una band militare si avvicina indossando i colori blu e rossi della fanteria francese. Il rendering geometrico dell’artista dà forza alla composizione già muscolare e evoca il movimento cadenzato del gruppo attraverso lo spazio. Verniciato tre anni prima dello scoppio della prima guerra mondiale, il dipinto sembra preannunciare l'imminente conflitto.
