Gerrit Toorenburgh lived through the middle decades of the eighteenth century, moving between the streets of Amsterdam and the quiet of Nijkerk. Born in 1732, his early years were shaped by the training he received under Jan ten Compe. His landscapes often carried a specific seasonal weight. In 1771, he captured a winter scene in Leiden, where figures skated upon the Oude Rijn. The composition included the Spanjaardsbrug in the foreground and the distant Zijlpoort, all set beneath a sky that felt heavy with moisture. This attention to topographical accuracy allowed him to document the landscape of the Netherlands as it existed in his time.
