Joseph Quinaux spent much of his life watching the way light settles on water and how shadows stretch through thickets. Born in Namur, Belgium, his hands were trained in the traditions of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts of Brussels, where he eventually spent his final years as a teacher. In the 1840s, he found himself in the forest of Fontainebleau. This time spent among the trees allowed him to absorb the quiet methods of the Barbizon School.
