While serving in the army, he sought out the guidance of local painters and studied under Tadas Daugirdas, later refining his eye through evening drawing courses in Fedosejevo, Saint Petersburg. His hunger for knowledge eventually led him to the prestigious art scenes of Berlin and Paris, where he received a scholarship from the Ministry of Education to study in France.
