Born in Copenhagen on 22 March 1872, Marie Sandholt was raised within a well-to-do family. She was the daughter of the physician Peter Boll Wivet Sandholt and Louise Victoria Aagaard. Her upbringing provided the stability necessary for her to pursue a formal education in the arts, a path that would eventually lead her away from the domestic expectations of her era.
Her formal training began at the Tegne- og Kunstindustriskolen for Kvinder, the Arts and Crafts School for Women. A significant, though perhaps unexpected, chapter of her education occurred in Skamstrup, near Holbæk. While working as a maid in the home of the painter Viggo Pedersen, Marie Sandholt found herself immersed in an environment of active creation. Sandholt’s professional life was marked by a versatile engagement with various mediums and instructional roles. These early explorations established her ability to handle sensitive, human subjects with a sense of quiet dignity.
As her practice matured, her brushwork moved toward more expansive, naturalistic scenes. She became particularly drawn to the outdoors, painting landscapes that favored a free and nuanced style.
