Born Arthur Victor Schack von Brockdorff on October 11, 1911, in Frederiksberg, the artist entered a world shaped by the steady, practical life of his father, a shipmaster. His early years were marked by a burgeoning interest in the visual arts, leading him to begin an apprenticeship in painting in 1927. This early immersion provided a foundational discipline before he moved into more formal, structured studies.
Between 1926 and 1929, Victor Brockdorff sought out private instruction, refining his technique under the guidance of Ernst Zeuthen and Olivia Holm Møller. These years of mentorship allowed him to develop a personal hand before entering the institutional rigors of the academy. His formal education eventually led him to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he focused on graphic art. These years were defined by a focus on the terrain, as he sought to capture the specific character of the local scenery through his brush.
The trajectory of his work shifted significantly when he moved to Paris, where he remained from 1946 to 1951. This period in France allowed him to refine his technical abilities as an illustrator. His engagement with the political climate of the era was reflected in his output; he produced illustrated reports detailing socialist movements, which were sent back to the Copenhagen journals Nationaltidende and Land og Folk.
