Raised in a family of seven children, his youth was shaped by the migratory rhythms of the American West, leading him through Idaho and Washington. Before he ever picked up a brush with professional intent, Martin had lived the very lives he would later immortalize on canvas. He worked as a printer from the age of twelve, labored as a lumberjack, and even stepped into the ring as a professional boxer. These formative, visceral experiences provided him with an unparalleled reservoir of subject matter, imbuing his art with a grit and physical presence that few self-taught masters could replicate.

His artistic development was a testament to the power of autodidacticism. While he lacked formal academic training, Martin possessed an extraordinary eye for movement and tension.
