The Restorer's Hand

Burladingen, 1831. A potter's son enters the world in the small principality of Hohenzollern-Hechingen. At fourteen, the path shifts from clay to pigment as he begins studying under the decorative painter Kaspar Lieb in Hettingen. The trajectory moves toward Augsburg between 1847 and 1854. Here, under the guidance of Anton Deschler, the technical foundations of art restoration take shape at the Kunstschule im Polytechnikum.

The work is precise. It requires an analytical eye for historical painting techniques. In 1896, this expertise is codified in his publication, Anleitung zur Technik der Oelmalerei. He does not merely look at a surface; he dissects the chemistry of the paint to determine how to preserve it. His hands touch the works of giants, repairing the Paumgartner altarpiece by Dürer and the Great Last Judgement by Rubens.

A Career in Conservation

The movement of his life follows the movement of great collections. From Hechingen to Löwenberg, then to Bamberg, and finally to Munich. In 1869, he becomes the conservator of paintings in Bamberg. By 1875, the focus shifts to the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. The responsibility grows. In 1885, he is appointed its conservator, later ascending to the rank of professor.

His professional life is defined by these institutional anchors:

  • Alte Pinakothek: Leading the conservation department and managing delicate restorations.
  • German National Museum: Contributing his skills to the collections in Nuremberg.
  • Bamberg Kunstinstitut: Serving as a key figure in the city's preservation efforts.

The legacy of his technical precision extends through his lineage. His son, Alois Hauser the Younger, follows this path of scientific restoration, eventually leading the conservation efforts at the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin in 1887. The craft remains a family discipline, rooted in the rigorous study of the physical medium.
