Born in Bochum, Germany, August Oppenberg’s life was shaped by the shifting landscapes of the early twentieth century. Following his schooling, he worked for the municipal administration of Wesel, though his path was interrupted by his service as an artilleryman during the First World War. After the war, while working for the administration of Obrighoven-Lackhausen, he pursued his passion for art at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Düsseldorf. Oppenberg’s artistic output was vast, with about two-thirds of his works being executed in black and white. He was known for his landscape paintings and his depictions of rural labor, earning him the nicknames "Maler des Niederrheins" and "Bauernmaler." His exhibitions took him across the German Reich, reaching international cities such as Amsterdam, Florence, Paris, and Vienna.
