The Life and Journey of Daniel Enkaoua
Born in Meaux, France, Daniel Enkaoua's early life involved attending several Jewish religious schools, a path that initially led him to consider a vocation in religion. However, after moving to Israel in 1981, he turned toward the world of art. He studied at the Avni Institute of Art in Tel Aviv, where he graduated in 1989. His career has seen significant international recognition, including a first solo show at Marlborough Fine Art in London in 1996, and subsequent exhibitions in New York, Amsterdam, Germany, Denmark, and Spain. In 2010, his portrait of his four-year-old son, Natan, was exhibited at the BP Portrait Award exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London, where it was voted the most popular painting by the visiting public.
In 2004, Enkaoua moved to Barcelona, where he currently resides with his wife and four children.
Artistic Style and Subject Matter
Enkaoua's work is primarily figurative, focusing on portraits and some still lifes. His paintings often feature a figure or object placed centrally against a neutral setting with little to no background. He utilizes a restricted color palette and a specific technique of applying paint in taches, which creates shimmering surfaces rather than harsh blocks of color. This method results in a duality where the paintings appear both animated and static. While his subject matter often includes children, his earlier career also included a series of landscapes of Israel in 1993.
