His academic foundation began with studies in industrial design at the Parsons School of Design and the Pratt Institute, followed by a Master of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1967. After returning to New York, he served as a studio assistant to Jasper Johns before beginning to show his work with the David Whitney Gallery in 1970.
