The Life and Career of Harry Chase
Born in Woodstock, Vermont, to Dr. Henry Seymour Chase and Sarah Denison Chase, Harry Chase spent his early years in Iowa before moving to St. Louis, Missouri. His formal artistic training began in St. Louis under James Reeve Stuart, followed by studies at the National Academy of Design in New York. Seeking further education, he traveled to Munich to study at the Bavarian Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1872 until 1875. Chase later moved to Paris to study under Paul Constant Soyer and eventually became a protégé of the Dutch marine painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag in the Netherlands.
Specializing in marine paintings, Chase established a notable presence in the United States, opening a studio in Manhattan during the 1880s. He was an Associate of the National Academy of Design and won the Hallgarten Prize in 1885 for his painting New York Harbor, North River. His career concluded following an onset of insanity in 1885. After receiving treatment in New York and Tennessee, he died in Sewanee, Tennessee.
