The Life and Art of Henri Beau
Born Louis-Henri Beau in Montréal, 1863, this French-Canadian painter studied under several masters, including Joseph Chabert, Léon Bonnat, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Jean-Léon Gérôme, and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. His education took him from the Institut National des Beaux-Arts to the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. While his early works between 1891 and 1899 reflect the Impressionist style, he also produced more structured works during his tenure as an associate archivist for the Parisian branch of the Public Archives of Canada from 1921 to 1938.
Beau's notable paintings include:
- Chemin en été
- La dispersion des Acadiens
- L'arrivée de Champlain à Québec
- Les Noces de Cana
Career and Recognition
Beau received various commissions, such as Les Noces de Cana for the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montréal and L'arrivée de Champlain à Québec for the Legislative Council of Quebec. In 1900, he was awarded a bronze medal at the World Fair in Paris for La Dispertion des Acadiens. Beyond his painting, he served as an official painter for the Archives, documenting historical customs and figures. He died in Paris in 1949.
