The Life and Artistic Path of Josef Eberz
Born in Limburg an der Lahn, Germany, Josef Eberz was a painter, illustrator, printmaker, and designer of mosaics and stained glass. His academic journey began at the Kunstakademie München, where he studied under Franz Stuck and Peter Halm, before moving to the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and later to Karlsruhe. His formal training continued at the Kunstakademie Stuttgart, where he was a master student of Adolf Hölzel from 1907 to 1912. During this period, he was a member of the Hölzelkreis, a group that exhibited alongside artists such as Willi Baumeister and Oskar Schlemmer. Eberz also held the title of Professor, having led studios for painting and graphics in the Munich teaching workshops.
His career was marked by significant religious commissions, including an altar painting for the Konviktskirche in Ehingen an der Donau and various works for the Pfarrkirche St. Rupert in Freilassing. His artistic output extended to large-scale murals, such as a fresco for the Deutsche Gewerbeschau München in 1922, and intricate mosaics, including works for the Kirche St. Gabriel in Munich and the Basilika St. Willibrord in Echternach. Throughout his life, Eberz was involved with several artistic associations, including the Neue Münchner Secession and the Darmstädter Sezession.
