Emmanuel Poiré (Caran d’Ache): A Master of Military Satire Emmanuel Poiré, more widely known by his adopted pseudonym Caran d’Ache – a name derived from the Russian word for pencil (“karandash”) – was a pivotal figure in 19th-century French humor and caricature. Born in Moscow in 1858 to French expatriate parents, his early life straddled two cultures before he ultimately settled in Paris, a city that would become the backdrop for his
prolific career. His artistic journey began with sketches of military life – a subject that would dominate much of his work and define his unique style.
