Hirohiko Araki: A Biography Early Life and Beginnings Born: June 7, 1960, in Sendai, Japan. Araki grew up with his parents and twin sisters. He credits his sisters’ playful teasing as a catalyst for spending time reading manga, particularly Ai to Makoto. Early Influences: His father's art books, especially the work of French artist Paul Gauguin, sparked his initial interest in drawing. He began submitting manga at a young age
but faced numerous rejections before gaining recognition. Early Career and Debut Araki initially attended Miyagi University of Education but left before graduating to pursue his artistic career. Debut Work: He debuted under the name Toshiyuki Araki in 1980 with the one-shot manga Poker Under Arms, which was selected for the Tezuka Award.
