Early Life and Artistic Beginnings Yechiel Shemi, born Yechiel Stizberg in 1922 in Israel, embarked on a life deeply intertwined with the evolving landscape of his nation and the burgeoning world of modern sculpture. His early years were marked by immigration – arriving in Mandate Palestine as an infant with his family and settling in Haifa. This formative experience instilled within him a profound connection to the land, a theme that
would resonate powerfully throughout his artistic career. At just fourteen, Shemi began formal art studies under Paul Henich, laying the groundwork for a future dedicated to creative expression. However, it was his involvement with the Mahane Avoda youth movement and, crucially, his co-founding of Kibbutz Beit HaArava in 1938 that truly shaped his artistic trajectory.
