The Life and Vision of Nancy Spero
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Nancy Spero was an American visual artist whose career spanned fifty years. After studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she continued her education in Paris at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and the Atelier of André Lhote. During her time in Europe, she lived and collaborated with artist Leon Golub. While living in Italy, Spero became intrigued by the style and mood of Etruscan and Roman frescoes and sarcophagi. Her later work often utilized a pictographic language of body gestures and motion, creating a figurative lexicon that represented women from prehistory to the present. She was a founding member of the A.I.R. Gallery in SoHo and a member of the Art Workers Coalition and Women Artists in Revolution.
Artistic Themes and Form
Spero's work engaged with political, social, and cultural concerns, often chronicling wars and violence alongside visions of rebirth and the cycles of life. Her practice included painting, draftspersonship, installation art, and hand-pulled art prints. She is noted for her use of long scrolls, such as Notes in Time on Women and The First Language, which utilized collaged and painted figures. In her War Series, she used gouache and inks on paper to represent the destruction of war. Her mature work often focused on the representation of women, exploring themes of political violence and sexism through expressive figuration and large-scale wall installations that engaged with architectural space.
