生い立ちと教育

ロックウェル・ケントは、アメリカの画家、版画家、イラストレーター、作家、そして航海士であり冒険家でもありました。1882年6月21日、ニューヨーク州タリータウンに生を享けます。イギリスの血を引くケントは、ホーレス・マン校に通い、ニューヨーク市とその周辺で幼少期を過ごしました。その芸術的才能は、1900年にアート・ストゥデンツ・リーグにてアーサー・ウェズリー・ダウから構図とデザインを学び、その後1900年から1902年にかけてウィリアム・メリット・チェイスのもとで絵画の研鑽を積みました。

芸術的キャリアとインスピレーション

ケントの初期の作品であるマウント・モナドノックやニューハンプシャーを描いた連作は、1904年にニューヨークのソサエティ・オブ・アメリカン・アーティストで初めて展示され、初期アメリカ・モダニストとしての彼の名声を決定づけるものとなりました。また、1907年にニューヨークのクラウゼン・ギャラリーで発表されたモネガン島連作（1905-1910年）は、メトロポリタン美術館、シアトル美術館、そしてニューブリテン・アメリカン・アート美術館など、全米の主要な美術館に収蔵されています。
