A Journey into the Intangible: The Art of Paula Klien
Paula Klien, born in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro in 1968, is a contemporary Brazilian artist whose work resonates with a profound exploration of spirituality and transcendence. Her artistic path has been one of dedicated self-discovery interwoven with formal study, resulting in an oeuvre that invites viewers to contemplate the unseen realms within and beyond our perception. While largely self-taught in the foundational skills of drawing, painting, and photography, Klien actively sought opportunities to refine her technique, beginning at the Visual Arts School of Parque Lage (EAV) in 1982. This early immersion was later complemented by a transformative workshop with renowned photographer Steve McCurry in
New York City in 2006, and further studies at the Kunst Gut Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin in 2015 – experiences that broadened her artistic horizons and solidified her unique vision.
From Photography to Ink: A Shifting Landscape
Klien’s creative journey has been marked by a willingness to embrace diverse mediums, allowing for an organic evolution of style and subject matter. Her decade-long career as a photographer provided a foundation in visual composition and the capturing of
fleeting moments, but it was her return to painting in 2016 that signaled a pivotal shift. This transition wasn’t merely a change in medium; it represented a deliberate move away from representation towards abstraction – an attempt to visualize inner landscapes rather than replicate external realities. The choice of Chinese ink as her primary tool is particularly significant, offering a fluidity and spontaneity that contrasts sharply with the precision of photography. It's a technique steeped in Taoist philosophy, embracing the principle of “let it flow,” allowing for unpredictable forms and textures to emerge organically on the canvas. This embrace of chance and intuition is central to Klien’s artistic process, mirroring her exploration of intangible concepts like spirituality and transcendence.
Echoes of Abstraction: Influences and Artistic Style
Though Klien doesn't explicitly name specific artists as direct influences, her work subtly echoes the principles of
Abstract Expressionism – particularly its emphasis on
emotional intensity and non-representational forms. There’s a shared commitment to conveying inner states through color, texture, and gesture, reminiscent of masters like
Mark Rothko or
Helen Frankenthaler. However, Klien's approach is distinctly her own, characterized by layered textures, subtle color palettes, and evocative forms that seem to emerge from the depths of consciousness. Her paintings aren’t about *what* they depict, but rather *how* they make you feel – inviting viewers to project their own interpretations onto the abstract surfaces. Recurring themes in her work include a deep engagement with questions of existence, the pursuit of experiences beyond ordinary perception, and an attempt to represent that which lies hidden beneath the surface. Her pieces often evoke a sense of
quiet contemplation, prompting introspection and a connection to something larger than oneself.
International Recognition and Major Works
Klien’s artistic vision has garnered increasing international recognition in recent years. Her solo exhibition ‘
Invisibilities’ in Berlin in February 2017 was a watershed moment, showcasing eleven large-scale paintings on canvas and paper alongside two backlit pieces and a three-dimensional work created with Chinese ink on foam. This collection established her as a compelling voice within the
contemporary art scene. Further solidifying her presence were participations in prestigious international art fairs including Clio Art Fair in
New York City (March 2017), arteBA in Buenos Aires (May 2017), Florence Biennale (December 2011) and Biennale d'Arte Internazionale di Roma (January 2012). Notable works such as “
Blue Node,” “
Choice,” “
All That Glitters,” “
Preludio” and “Tao” exemplify her signature style – abstract compositions that invite viewers to lose themselves in the interplay of light, shadow, and texture. More recently, Klien has begun exploring the intersection of traditional techniques with digital media, incorporating photography into her process and venturing into the realm of NFTs, further expanding the boundaries of her artistic expression.
A Contemporary Voice: Historical Significance
As a contemporary Brazilian artist gaining prominence on the global stage, Paula Klien contributes to the ongoing dialogue within
abstract art. Her work offers a unique perspective on universal themes of spirituality and human experience, bridging Eastern philosophical traditions with Western abstract aesthetics. She is not simply creating visually appealing objects; she’s crafting portals into inner worlds – spaces for contemplation, introspection, and connection. Currently living and working, Klien continues to explore these concepts through her paintings and photographic endeavors, solidifying her position as a notable voice in the
contemporary art world—an artist who dares to visualize the invisible and invite us to join her on a journey into the intangible.
