Born in Lillhärdal, Sweden, Carl Staaff was a versatile painter, drawing teacher, and court painter. His artistic journey began under the guidance of a local craftsman before he moved to the Stockholm Academy to study under Johan Gustaf Sandberg. During his studies, he received a second medal for his painting Ferdinand Cortez after landing in Mexico. Although he briefly left Stockholm to work as a portrait painter in Härnösand and Rödön, he eventually returned to the capital, where he achieved significant professional recognition.
Staaff’s career was marked by prestigious appointments, including serving as a drawing teacher at Slöjdskolan and being named a titular professor and court painter. He was a member of the Academy and held the rank of agré.
