A Shift in the Portuguese Palette
Lisbon, 1685. A young André Gonçalves enters an apprenticeship within the workshops of António de Oliveira Bernardes. For years, he absorbs the traditional methods of his era, studying until 1704. The air in these studios carries the weight of the prevailing Spanish styles, a heavy influence that dominates the local landscape. But something is shifting.
By 1711, Gonçalves joins the Guild of Saint Luke, securing his place among the city's professional painters for life. He begins to look beyond the borders of the Iberian Peninsula. While others cling to established traditions, he seeks out the light and movement of French and Italian influences. This is a departure. It is a deliberate move toward a new aesthetic language.
The Expansion of Style
The 1720s mark a period of personal definition. In the convent of "Our Lady of the Conception of Cardais," his hand becomes more distinct. He moves from the shadows of apprenticeship into the light of independent creation. His reach extends to the Azores, where he paints screens for the chapel of "Our Lady Jesuit Church" on Faial Island. These works, depicting the Death of the Virgin and the Apostles at Mary's tomb, carry the weight of his evolving technique.
The early 1730s bring a massive undertaking: the decoration of the Mafra Convent at the Mafra National Palace. Here, amidst one of Portugal's most significant architectural projects, he works alongside other notable artists. The environment is a collision of ideas, bringing him into direct contact with the work of French and Italian Baroque masters. This exposure solidifies his role as an agent of change in Portuguese painting.
A Legacy Interrupted
His later years are defined by religious commissions that populate the churches of Portugal. He works at the Paulist convent and the Church of the Child of God alongside Vieira Lusitano. In the 1740s, his brush touches the walls of the Church of Mater Dei. By the 1750s, he returns to this same site, tasked with a series of scenes depicting Saint Joseph's life in Egypt and a rendition of The Assumption for the chancel gable.
The scale of his output is significant:
- Portraits of saints for the refectory at the Church of Saint Roch.
- Paintings of Saint Dominic and Saint Joseph for the "Sacred Heart of Jesus Church" in Santa Cruz da Graciosa.
- The 1730 work, Assunção de Nossa Senhora (Assumption of Our Lady).
Then comes 1755. The Lisbon earthquake strikes. In a single moment of seismic violence, much of the physical record of his life's work is destroyed or severely damaged. What remains are fragments of a career that successfully bridged the gap between Spanish tradition and the burgeoning influence of the rest of Europe.
