His formal artistic education began at the Akademie van beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, where he was a pupil of Jozef Geefs and Eugène Lacomblé. He continued his studies at the Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp from 1870 to 1874. Following a Royal subsidy from Prince Hendrik, he moved to Paris to study under P.J. Cavelier at the Beaux-Arts between 1874 and 1878. After winning the Prix de Rome in 1881, which allowed him to study in Italy for a year, he relocated to Amsterdam in 1882.
