The Life and Artistic Journey of Charles Blackman
Born in Sydney, Australia, Charles Blackman was a painter who emerged as a significant figure in the Australian art scene. After leaving school at thirteen, he worked as an illustrator for The Sun newspaper while attending night classes at East Sydney Technical College. He was largely self-taught, a path that eventually led to him being awarded an honorary doctorate. His career saw him move to Melbourne in the mid-1940s, where he became part of the Antipodeans, a group of painters that included artists such as Arthur Boyd and John Brack. As a signatory to the 1959 Antipodean Manifesto, he stood against the dominance of abstract expressionism.
Blackman's work is often characterized by dreamlike images tinged with mystery and foreboding. He gained critical acclaim through his Schoolgirl and Alice in Wonderland series during the 1950s. His life was marked by significant travels, including a period in London after winning a Helena Rubenstein travelling scholarship, and a year in Paris after being awarded an atelier studio in the Cité internationale des arts. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1977 for his services to Australian art.
Personal Life and Legacy
Blackman's personal life was deeply intertwined with the arts. He was married for 27 years to the author and poet Barbara Blackman. He also had marriages to Genevieve de Couvreur and Victoria Bower, and he fathered six children: Auguste, Christabel, Barnaby, Beatrice, Felix, and Axiom. In his later years, he lived with dementia in Sydney before passing away in an aged care facility.
His artistic legacy is reflected in various ways:
