Munich, 1903. The foundations of Erna Amend’s artistic identity begin in the classrooms of the Volksschule and Oberschule, eventually leading her to the halls of the Kunstgewerbeschule. The creative impulse is forced into the shadows of administrative work and manual toil.
The Struggle for Autonomy
The post-war era brings a different kind of instability. While she returns to freelance painting in 1945, the economic volatility of the currency reform in 1948 forces her back into a clerical role, this time as a secretary in the architecture office of von der Lippe. Her resilience is marked by a persistent return to her primary vocation, a slow reclamation of the space she once held in the art world.
By the mid-1950s, the momentum of her painting returns. She exhibits with Günther Franke and finds her way into the circles of the Goergenkreis. Her presence in the Munich art scene is solidified through exhibitions at Gurlitt and her involvement in the Forum. Her work, such as the 1970 piece Diagonal Composition, reflects a sophisticated understanding of structure and space, held within the collections of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, Munich.
