A Life of Light and Shadow

John Young Johnstone lived a life that mirrored the quiet, often somber moods found within his canvases. Born in Montreal on November 12, 1887, he began his artistic path under the guidance of William Brymner at the Art Association of Montreal. This early training provided him with a foundation that would later expand through much more international experiences. Between 1911 and 1915, he traveled to Paris, immersing himself in the atmosphere of the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. There, he studied under instructors such as Lucien Simon and Émile-René Ménard, sharing a studio with Adrien Hérbert.

His time in Europe allowed him to observe the landscapes of France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Holland. These travels left a mark on his technique, as he learned to capture the subtle shifts in light and atmosphere. Upon returning to Canada, he turned his attention toward the familiar sights of Quebec and Ontario. He found beauty in the rural scenes of the Canadian wilderness, particularly the forests, rivers, and lakes that defined the landscape. His work often documented the daily life of Montreal, including the specific character of the city's Chinatown.

The Evolution of a Style

The way Johnstone approached a canvas changed as he matured. His earlier works, produced roughly between 1911 and 1915, possessed a certain structure and a delicate perception. During these years, his paintings were colorful and showed the influence of the Impressionists he had studied in Paris. He often utilized an "S" curve in his compositions to create a sense of movement and depth. As time passed, his style moved toward a simplified realism. By the period between 1916 and 1930, his work took on a more mature, subdued quality.

In these later years, he began to use a more muted palette. He moved away from capturing fleeting moments to focusing on a sense of duration and stillness. His paintings often carried a subtle gloom or a quiet mystery, achieved through the careful gradation of color hues. This ability to compress space within small panels helped him create works that felt intimate yet profound. While he was an active member of groups like the Beaver Hall Group and the Pen and Pencil Club of Montreal, his personal style remained uniquely his own.

Final Days in Havana

Despite his professional achievements, Johnstone’s later years were marked by significant personal difficulty. He was a man who experienced both critical recognition and deep personal struggles. While the National Gallery of Canada acquired several of his canvases during his lifetime, his private life was often shadowed by depression and heavy drinking. In 1928, he faced the hardship of being expelled from the Montreal Arts Club.

Seeking an escape from the harsh Canadian winters, he traveled to Cuba in 1929. He arrived in Havana with little to his name and lived in a state of destitution. His life came to an end much too soon; he died in Havana on February 13, 1930, at the age of 43. Though his life ended in isolation, his contributions to Canadian modernism remain held in major institutions such as the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.
