The Geometry of Reduction

Born in Osijek, Croatia, in 1924, Julije Knifer began his adult life far from the canvas, initially enrolling in the Faculty of Law in Zagreb. This academic path was soon abandoned for the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under Duro Tiljak. His early years were marked by a transition from figuration to a more stripped-back language. Between 1949 and 1951, he engaged in a series of self-portraits, an exercise in repetition that hinted at his future obsession with the singular form. He sought a way to pare away the unnecessary, moving toward what he called an anti-painting.

By 1960, Knifer had arrived at the meander. This geometric, maze-like motif became the central axis of his entire production. It was not a shape meant to tell a story or represent a landscape, but a way to explore rhythm and structure through black and white. He worked with various media, including oil, acrylic, collage, and print, often focusing on the tension between vertical and horizontal lines. His approach was one of extreme reduction, an ascetic method that used repetition to create a sense of stability or instability within the frame.

The Gorgona Years and the Meander

In the late 1950s, Knifer became a founding member of the Gorgona Group, a Zagreb-based collective active until 1966. This group sought intellectual and artistic freedom through conceptual practices. While his contemporaries explored different avenues of the neo-avant-garde, Knifer focused on the escalation of uniformity. He viewed his meanders not as isolated objects, but as connected acts in a continuous series. To him, the work was about the process of applying layers or strokes, a ritualistic movement that lacked a traditional sense of progress or regression.

The scale of his ambition occasionally broke free from the confines of paper and canvas. In 1975, he created a massive meander on a 20 x 30 m canvas within a quarry in Tübingen. This large-scale work demonstrated that his geometric language could inhabit architectural spaces. His practice remained rooted in the study of absence and the precision of execution, often utilizing heavy, rough paper or dense graphite to create surfaces that reflected light like mirrors.

A Life in Motion

Knifer’s career took him from the local exhibitions of Zagreb, such as the New Tendencies shows, to the international stage. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1976 and 2001, and his work was included in the São Paulo Art Biennale in 1973, 1979, and 1981. His move to Paris in 1994 marked the final chapter of his life. He lived there until his death in 2004.

His influence is documented in the permanent collections of several major institutions:

  • Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb
  • Centre Pompidou, Paris
  • Museum of Modern Art, New York
  • Tate London, London
  • National Gallery, Berlin
  • Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris

The work remains a study in the power of the simple. Through the meander, Knifer found a way to record a timeless existence, using the repetition of a single form to create a sense of calm and order.
