Kay Rosen is an American painter, printmaker, video artist, conceptual artist, installation artist, and performance artist. Born in Corpus Christi, United States, her work is characterized by a deep engagement with language, utilizing formalism, linguistics, and humor to reveal content hidden within the structural nature of written language. Through the manipulation of text, Rosen explores how meaning is generated, often employing wordplay to express language visually. Her technique frequently involves the juxtaposition of letters or the use of different colors and scales to reveal hidden messages or to draw attention to the relationship between language and meaning. In many of her works, words and letter-forms function as building blocks, where unusual typographic arrangements allow phrases to embody the very thing they are describing.
