A Life Shaped by the American Landscape Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1872, Peter Lanz Hohnstedt began his path through the world of art under the guidance of Frank Duveneck and Victor Casnelli. His early years were marked by a restless movement across the American landscape, driven as much by necessity as by a desire to see new horizons. Before he was known for his brushes, he earned his living in more rugged ways, pearling the rivers o
f Arkansas and later working as a floor finisher in Memphis, Tennessee. These years of manual labor and wandering through riverbanks provided him with a direct, unmediated connection to the natural world that would later define his oil paintings. The arrival of Hohnstedt in New Orleans around 1914 brought a significant shift in his fortunes. It was here that his talent caught the eye of a museum patron who offered him a room on a yacht…
