The Multifaceted Career of Peter Plagens
Born in Dayton, United States, Peter Plagens is a versatile figure whose professional life spans the realms of visual art and literature. As a painter, he has maintained a consistent body of abstract formalist work for five decades. His artistic practice involves a dialogue between different visual strategies, often characterized by a tension between hard-edged geometry and gestural abstraction. His paintings frequently explore the coexistence of incompatible styles, such as the use of fluid, expressive shapes alongside jarring, hard-edged rectangles. In his recent works on paper, he has utilized centralized compositions that incorporate collaged photographs or found paper with text and graphic images.
Beyond the canvas, Plagens is a prominent novelist and art critic. He has served as a senior writer and art critic for Newsweek and has contributed extensively to Artforum. His literary output includes three books on art and two novels, The Art Critic and Time for Robo. His work has been recognized with fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts for both his painting and his writing.
Artistic Evolution and Recognition
Plagens's painting career has been marked by a continuous exploration of form and color. His early works often featured emphatic shapes like circles, diamonds, and trapezoids placed upon vivid color fields. Over time, his compositions evolved to include more complex elements, such as:
His art has been featured in surveys at several major institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). His work is held in various public and corporate collections, such as the Hirshhorn Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In 2004, the USC Fisher Gallery organized a 30-year traveling retrospective of his work.
