The Resilience of a Visionary

Born in London, United Kingdom, Weaver Hawkins was a painter and printmaker whose creative journey was defined by profound personal perseverance. During World War I, he was seriously wounded in the Battle of the Somme at Gommecourt, France. The injuries rendered his right hand and arm useless, yet he refused to abandon his calling. After teaching himself to paint using his left arm, he became known for his work in etching, monotypes, linocuts, and woodcuts. His artistic output often took the form of ambitious, sometimes mural-sized, modernist allegories of morality, addressing themes of global over-population and the age of atomic warfare.

In 1927, to ensure he was recognized for his own talent rather than being identified solely as a wounded artist, he adopted the art-name Raokin. He eventually became more widely known as Weaver Hawkins. His life was marked by a bohemian spirit; he was known to design and make his own sandals and lived a nomadic lifestyle, traveling through St Tropez, Spain, Italy, Malta, and Tahiti before settling in Australia in 1935.

Artistic Legacy and Recognition

Hawkins was a central figure in the Australian art community, serving as a founding member and president of the Contemporary Art Society. His work was frequently recognized by major institutions, including being a finalist for the Wynne Prize and the Archibald Prize. His pieces were selected for the Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1952, 1953, and 1960. Notable works from his catalog include:

His technical mastery and ability to transform intricate religious concepts into individual art forms earned him critical attention. He remained active in the arts until 1972, leaving behind a significant body of work that includes pieces held in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney.
